Peculiar Factories is a design research program that analyzes the five major stages of China’s industrialization, namely the Republic of China period, the period of Sino-Soviet Friendship and Alliance, the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, the reform and opening up, and the period of high-tech industrial parks. The program aims at probing into the history of industrialization in the 20th century to describe the process of industrialization and industry migration in Chinese cities during different periods and the opportunities therein; it also sheds light on the instability and evolution of industrial buildings, indicating that such buildings will become more chaotic and diverse in the future.
